Reiki: Integrating Energy Work with Therapeutic Practices

Reiki is often spoken of with a sense of mystique—many are curious about it, yet few truly understand what it is or how it works. As a Reiki practitioner, I integrate this subtle yet profound energy healing into traditional therapy practices. Whether you've experienced Reiki or not, let’s demystify its concepts and provide a logical foundation for what might otherwise seem intangible.

Reiki, derived from the Japanese words rei (universal) and ki (life energy), is an ancient form of energy healing that seeks to balance the body’s energy fields, also known as the subtle body. Reiki practitioners, myself included, believe that by channeling universal life energy through their physical vessel (the hands), they can support physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. This gentle, non-invasive practice has its roots in Japan, where it was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, who believed that this energy could support the body’s natural healing processes.

Honoring the Lineage: History of Reiki

Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, is credited with the discovery of Reiki in the early 1920s. After a transformative experience on Mount Kurama, where he underwent a 21-day meditation retreat, Usui reported being given the ability to heal through his hands. He established the Usui System of Natural Healing, which was later brought to the West by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman who learned Reiki in Japan and introduced it to the United States in the 1930s. Since then, Reiki has spread globally, with many practitioners and variations of the original practice emerging over the decades.

How Reiki Healing Works

Similar to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the foundation upon which Acupuncture emerged, Reiki is based on the principle that an unseen life force energy flows through all living beings. When this energy is low or blocked, it can lead to physical illness or emotional distress. Conversely, when it is high and flowing freely, it promotes health and well-being. During a Reiki session, I channel energy through my hands into the client’s body, helping to remove energetic and spiritual blockages in order to restore balance to the energy fields.

Research on Reiki and other forms of energy healing has shown promising results, though it is still a developing field. Studies suggest that Reiki can reduce stress, anxiety, and pain, and may enhance the body’s natural healing processes. For instance, a 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that Reiki significantly reduced pain and anxiety in patients undergoing surgery. Other research has indicated that Reiki may help improve mood and increase overall well-being, making it a valuable complement to conventional medical treatments.

Understanding the Subtle Body and Its Role in Holistic Healing

The subtle body encompasses the non-physical aspects of our being—our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual energies. Often depicted as a network of energy centers (chakras) and pathways (meridians), the subtle body plays a crucial role in our overall health. When energy in the subtle body becomes blocked or imbalanced, it can manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. Reiki and other energy healing practices work by restoring balance to the subtle body, promoting the free flow of energy and supporting holistic healing. By addressing these non-physical imbalances, Reiki helps alleviate physical symptoms, reduce emotional distress, and enhance spiritual well-being, recognizing the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit for overall vitality.

Integrating Reiki & Somatic Therapy

Combining Reiki with other therapeutic practices, such as Somatic Experiencing®, talk therapy, and intuitive touch, can offer a powerful, integrated approach to healing. Somatic Experiencing®, for example, is a body-oriented therapy that helps release trauma stored in the body, allowing clients to process and heal from past experiences at a biological, neurological, and emotional level. When combined with Reiki, clients may experience a deeper release of energy blockages with more ease, facilitating a more profound healing process. Reiki can also help to calm the nervous system, reducing anxiety and allowing clients to engage more fully in the therapeutic process.
